Registration: To register or get more information, visit the Green Mechanical Council website. | Description: People are becoming more and more enthusiastic about “green”. Industry professionals know they really mean high performance, energy efficient buildings and mechanical systems. We can’t pick up a magazine, watch television or read a newspaper without hearing “green”. Sometimes they use “green” to mean “earth friendly”. Sometimes they use “green” to mean “energy efficient”. Sometimes they use “green” to mean “sustainable”. Here lies the problem. Although many are excited about the concept, few understand the mechanics of the language. Sitting in a meeting with words like “charrette”, “triple bottom line”, and “biomass” being thrown about; reading an article talking about “life cycle analysis versus first cost”; or reading installation instructions which calls for “combustion analysis” as part of the “commissioning”. GreenSpeak is an orientation to the language and culture of Green. This presentation provides definitions to commonly used phrases and words, discusses misconceptions which must be overcome, and identifies trends which are making Green not only “mainstream” but the future of our professions and lifestyles. The mission of the Green Mechanical Council (www.greenmech.org) is to educate contractors, field technicians, and industry leaders about creating and maintaining environmentally sound residential and commercial mechanical systems.
